My boyfriend's cats found him. A few years ago, a cat started coming to his door at his old apartment. He saw her at his front door a couple of times and figured someone had let her out. Another day he found her on his back doorstep as well. Eventually he figured that she was looking for a home, and he let her in. Shortly after that, she gave birth. He was able to rehome the kittens to others in his apartment building except for one. So he has a mom and a baby. And I use the term "baby" loosely since he's probably 7 now and the same size as his mom. I never had cats growing up. I had friends who had cats, but I also had a lot of allergies so I mostly tried to stay away from everyones' pets. My parents usually had a dog (which was hell on my allergies), and despite the fact that they made me sick, I usually found them too sweet and adorable not to love.

When my boyfriend moved in with his cats, I assumed I'd eventually feel that way about them too. So far, it's not happening. The mom cat is sweet, and actually if it was just her, I might be further along in the loving process. The baby cat is a jerk who seems to have multiple personalities. Sometimes he's relaxed and easygoing. Sometimes if I happen to walk within 3 feet of him he hisses and swats at me. The other day he walked over my boyfriend to curl up on me and seemed to be happy there. I rubbed his head and his ears and he purred. Eventually he wandered off, and a couple minutes later I got up to get some water and he hissed and swatted at me again. I've tried feeding them, giving them treats, playing with them, etc. The mom cat loves me, purrs when I'm close to her, etc. The baby cat can't decide if he likes me or hates me.

If it were entirely up to me, I would prefer to not live with the cats. I don't like the hair all over the place, I don't like finding the occasional kitty puke in the middle of the night with my bare toes, I don't like them propping open the curtains to look outside while I'm trying to change clothes (we live in a ranch house in a neighborhood with a lot of foot traffic), I don't like finding them on the countertops in the kitchen, I don't like being startled first thing in the morning by a hissing, swatting cat. Plus, although my allergies are far better controlled then they were when I was a kid, I still have some allergy issues with them. However, I love my boyfriend very much, so the cats will stay. I just have to figure out how to love them.
