I was half-hearted about going to parkrun today considering how high the temperature already was when I got up (about 75°F/23°C) and how much it was predicted to rise by 9 am when parkrun starts, and I ended up skipping it. Instead I walked to Safeway - about 4 km/2 ½ miles - to buy some chicken for the curried chicken I'm planning to make tomorrow. I did buy some chicken when I was at MOM's early in the week, but it turned out I should have checked the recipe before I went because I didn't buy enough and I want to make a good number of servings so I don't have to cook for the rest of the week.

I started working on a new puzzle a couple of weeks ago and it's slow going. It's a very pretty picture but it has huge expanses of sky, plus a whole lot of pink flowers both on the ground and all over a large tree, and it's slow going.

Update

When Jackie got to elbow coffee this morning, she said 'oh, Susan, I got my computer fixed! Turns out it wasn't even broken. I just wasn't clicking on the right thing.' I am so glad I backed out of that mess before it hit miss level. And now she thinks I'm incompetent which is PERFECT.

Today I took skeins of yarn to roll into the small balls I like to use. It's a chore that I really don't enjoy but doing it during elbow coffee is very useful. It gives me something to focus on and enables me to more easily keep my mouth shut. Worked perfectly.

Now, volleyball is done - it was good. And elbow coffee is done. Dinner is ordered for pick up. And the Phillies are ahead of the Yankees in the 4th.

I have baseball to watch and knitting to do and afternoon free. Oh and Steve brought me a cucumber this morning so I'm going to slice it up to have in a sandwich with the rest of my ham for lunch.

Life is good.

IT support rant

People unwilling to learn how to use computers should not be allowed to touch them. Or should have live in 24/7 IT Support.

Jackie, new girl, came out to the elbow to find me puzzling. "Susan, can you help me?" "I'll try, what do you need help with, Jackie?" "That IT guy installed Gmail on my computer and now all my Xfinity icons are missing."

It did not get any better. Once there, she waived her hand in front of the screen and asked Where are all my icons? She had clicked on Chrome. She had no bookmarks. I suggested she contact the guy who worked on her computer. "But he won't come today, it's Friday." She's actually probably right there. We logged into her Xfinity mail account and the situation did not get better.

What are the icons you are looking for? It would help if I had specifics of what they were. "All the things I go to every day."

Reminded me of the old gag - What's the Soup du Jour? Answer: Soup of the Day.

Although she clicks on these icons every day, she had no idea where or what she was clicking on - could not give me a clue. "It's all my important stuff." So, Jackie, easy to say in hind sight, but you might want to make a note of the specifics - if it's newspaper, what newspaper exactly. If it's a group, what group exactly. Then she started with the snark. "Those people (meaning the IT guy) aren't very responsive, are they? I put in a work order a week ago and he just came today."

Actually, not really his job to install stuff for her at all, that was very nice of him to do.

"So you won't help me." Yep, that's correct. "Jackie, I'm sorry, but I don't know your computer or how you have it set up to use. You need to go to whoever set it up for you originally or back to the guy who made changes."

AND get the fuck out of my face. I did notice, when I went into her apartment, that she had a jigsaw puzzle in progress in her den. I said a little prayer of thank you that she does not work our puzzles in the elbow.

I'm making a loaf of sourdough cinnamon raisin bread today, and you'd better believe I'm keeping a very close eye on it so that it doesn't rise too much, considering that the temperature outside is around 95°F/35°C. Yes, the a/c is set to 78°F (so I'm comfortable in here) but sourdough bread is extremely sensitive to both heat and humidity and rises much more quickly in hot weather.

I had a good night's sleep last night but even though I felt refreshed when I woke up, I had decided last night that I would have a lazy morning - i.e. no early morning exercise (or later exercise either) so I didn't get up when the alarm went off, instead I lay around in bed reading for almost two hours. Basically the whole day has been lazy apart from making the bread. It's forecast to be very hot for the next week or so, and I'm really not looking forward to it. I'm kind of tempted to skip the exercise for the whole week, but I know I'd end up feeling bad if I did that so I guess I'll be forcing myself out in the early mornings as usual.

My alarm didn't go off before its set time this morning, but I had ordered another one yesterday which arrived today so I won't be using the old one any more. Hoping the new one doesn't develop the same fault. (It's a different brand, and cheaper too.)

Friday

The very big news around here is that we are getting not one, but two Asian grocery stores here in Issaquah and one of them is my very favorite from my old neighborhood - Uwajimaya!!! And it will be very nearly the closest grocery store to me! HMart is also moving here, not far but not as close. Mucho excitement. I don't know when either is opening. Probably not until next year but hallefuckinglooyah!!!

I also learned yesterday from Bonny, that I am off the default Hazel and John taxi list. They apparently went to her earlier in the week and asked for a ride to the doctor and she told them yes and then decided it wasn't convenient so she went and told them no but also suggested they use Lyft which they have done quite successfully in the past. They had totally forgotten about that. They do it through the front desk receptionist and it works fine for them. So WHEW!! John called me yesterday and he said the doctors told him he has amyloidosis. Google tells me this is rare and treatment is chemotherapy, organ transplant or targeted medication therapy. No cure. And it sounds pretty fucking fatal for an 89 year old. But John has not been told any of this yet. At least I'm not longer responsible for them.

Mid morning yesterday I got several email and texts that the shades install guy's wife had a baby Wednesday night so no shades install. This actually was good news as I was just not up for it yesterday. No word from them since so today won't be it either. Which is fine.

Today is new menu day. We still have today and tomorrow for the scrumptious tenderloin steak and caramelized onions. No nasty spinach swap last night - whew!!

I do think it's pretty weird that when I find a meal I love, I am perfectly fine with having it every night for a week. After the week, I'm ready to move on. I'm ok with variety but I am also happy to have a great meal on repeat.

My Netflix month ends today. I'm all caught up. If/when another something comes up that I want to see, I'll start it up again. I have Apple + and PBS Masterpiece running now at reduced rates (thank you, Amazon) and a fair amount to watch on both. And, of course, the Mariners. I've gotten pretty good at keeping my high priced feeds managed so that if I'm not watching, I'm not paying.

But, my big TV find lately has been the Roku channel. They now have all the British Sewing Bee episodes!! Except, of course, the latest season that just started last week. But, I'm guessing it will be added eventually. Also they have all episodes of that bake off after show. It's dumb but interesting for a few episodes anyway.

Nothing happening today which is lovely. I think I'll get dressed and go downstairs to pick up the menus and my Amazon package which was just delivered to the lockers. After that, who knows??

365 Questions 2025

19. What do you think is worth waiting for? Anything that will enrich your life.

20. What chances do you wish you had taken? I can't think of any chances I wish I'd taken, but I can think of decisions I made which changed my life - chances I took, I guess.

21. Where else would you like to live? Why? I'd like to live in London or Boston, because both of those are old cities which are very walkable, at least until you get out into the suburbs.

22. What motivates you to go to work each day? No job, so I don't need that motivation.

23. What do you wish you had done differently? I wish I'd been a better parent. In many ways I was a good parent, but I'm very conscious of mistakes I made in the way I handled some things.

24. What is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness? I think my greatest strength is my ability to doggedly persevere through hard things. One of my greatest weaknesses is procrastination when I'm not sure how to proceed or I'm afraid to proceed.

Sweating out a return with no receipt

When I return things to Amazon through UPS they always give me a recipt.  It is a package sticker kind of thing that is not cheap for them and really a waste.  I usually put them in the trash in my car knowing that it will be there still if I need it.  But just as frequently I say I don't need a receipt.  Typically the return is for $20 or less and would not kill me if I lost the money but the delivery is always there.  And normally I get an email from Amazon saying that the return is on the way.  Alternately there is a Whole Foods 360 that is 5 miles away that used to have an Amazon drop off kiosk.  I think that is gone as I've not had that alternative for a long time.

I took my way over $20 Chromebook return to UPS all packaged up and ready to go and, as usual, said no thanks to the return.  This was on a Saturday.  Of course there was no pickup on a Saturday or Sunday so I was already a bit nervous that the UPS status was not helpful and Amazon had no record yet and I did not have a receipt.

Amazon still has no record but, whew, UPS says 'out for delivery' today.  I expect to have my money safely back in my account by end of today.  It will help pay off some of the airline cost I just incurred for the Octover trip to my son's wedding.

I had to move some money from my Investment account to be sure I can cover the credit card tomorrow.  No vilolation of the weekly pay off rule.  I've planned for this for the past six months squirelling away money in the investment account for just this purpose.  Still, it was nice to see it in there and annoying to have to transfer it out.

It will start rebuilding immediately and will be back to normal by end of the year.  Meanwhile I worry less and less about spending a reasonable amount of money as the days and years go by.

We have a large lump of money coming from USAA in four months as a result of leaving them.  As a mutual we held our share of the company by having a percentage of our monthly payment held back for the member's pool of funds.  That was fine and now I've left USAA they will return my portion.  It will likely go to a trip to someplace like Scotland or Hawaii or something like that.

While we can still move around and do anything best to take advantage.

Zoe today:  She is snoring on the floor behind me.  Yesterday she really wanted to turn back a third of the way into the walk but this morning was galumphing along having a good time.  And now is napping as only she can nap.

Ugh, I woke up around 2 am and was unable to go back to sleep. So it's now midday and I've been up for ten hours. At this rate, having also had a short night about four nights ago, I'm averaging about 5 hours sleep a night and it's not quite enough. (Unless this is my new normal.)

Back in March I bought a vibrating alarm clock that goes under my pillow, and it's been working really well. I have it set on the lowest vibration and it's plenty loud enough to wake me, plus it's really easy to turn off if I don't want the alarm to go off for some reason. When I was using an old phone as my alarm it felt like a huge hassle to turn it on and reset or turn off the alarm if necessary, so this clock is a big improvement over that. However… the clock has developed a random fault that I don't think I can live with. Every so often it goes off sometime during the night, an hour or two before it's supposed to go off, which of course wakes me up unnecessarily, and then goes off again at the correct time. I vaguely remember it happening a few weeks ago and waking me up, but this morning it happened again around 3:45 am when I was already awake, so I knew I hadn't imagined it the first time. This is not acceptable, so I'm looking at different models of the same kind of alarm clock. (Vibrating, under-the-pillow alarms for the hard of hearing.)

Okay, funny story. I just went to Amazon and wrote a review of this clock. When I'd submitted it, Amazon showed me some other things I'd recently bought and told me to write six more reviews and they'd tell me a joke. Really? A joke is my reward for reviewing products?

'tude

I spent all day yesterday avoiding people and it was great. Until last night. I was watching the baseball game and it was extra innings and the teams were swapping the lead back and forth, so quite riveting, when Martha stopped in. I was not in a Martha mood and I wanted to watch the baseball.

And then Martha started talking about Hazel and how I need to let Timber Ridge take over what their sons can't/won't do. In Martha world, this is like a switch. In the real world this is not going to happen ever. "Well, Hazel needs to... " "Timber Ridge should..." While telling me that I need to be careful about doing too much.

I do love Martha and most days, I'm delighted to have her input. But, last night was not most days. So I missed some key baseball action and went to bed grumpy. Oh and also, I ordered caramelized onions as a side with my dinner and they left them out and replaced them with spinach! In what fucking world is spinach an acceptable substitute for caramelized onions?????????

But, today I'm all better.

The shades installer is supposed to come today to rehang my window shade so that I can, once again, open the window. His office says he'll be here sometime between 12 and 4. Based on the last time, that means I can expect him about 4:30 or 5. Oh, wait, the woman who called said 12-4. BUT the email says 12-1 and the text just says 12. Soooooo arrival time is not this morning but any-time-is-a-good-guess this afternoon. I'm not looking forward to dealing with him because of the sloppy job he did last time. But I am looking forward to having my shades fixed.

And while I'm being snarky and bitchy... did I say I was all better this morning??? ... my tendinitis is back in my right elbow. I felt it a little last Tuesday when playing volleyball. I mean to wear my elbow brace this morning and left it in my closet. So I played with my right arm behind my back. I used it for a couple of shots but mainly used my left hand/arm to play with. I was actually kind of surprised at what a nice job it did. It certainly earned its keep. BUT my Pixel watch was exhausted after 2 hours. It detected 2 car wrecks and 3 falls. I kept having to stop and tell it that I was fine. I suspect I have now fucked up their detection data but good.

Next up, I need to get dressed and then go down to the front desk and pick up the copies of the Timber Ridge Times for our floor and distribute them. John has done it for a long time but I told him I'd take over. They usually have them out and ready on my way back from volleyball but not today. No prob. I can use the steps.

After two failures at making yeast bread using my food processor, today I went back to the basic recipe given in the food processor manual, and ended up with a successful loaf. Now that I know what I did wrong when the loaves didn't turn out well, I'll be better able to experiment with adding different ingredients to the basic recipe.

We were back to extreme humidity this morning - about 95% while I was out walking - but now it has dropped to "only" 54%.

I've hit a wall with my slow house clearing; I think it's because now I want to keep almost everything that's left but I know I need to cull some more, so there's an emotional block that wasn't really there with the earlier clearing. I'm sure there is plenty of stuff that will get tossed willy nilly at the last minute, but not yet.

Lovely morning

This morning I woke up about 6 but laid in bed with eyes kind of open, kind of closed for another 30 minutes. Biggie and Julio were not impressed but I enjoyed it. Then I got up, made coffee, fed them and internetted.

Last night I had the most delicious dinner that included roasted rosemary potatoes which I did not finish. This morning they woke up in the air fryer and were topped with some bacon and a scrambled egg. Yum. I think I may have that exact dinner again tonight. So... tomorrow morning... oh, wait, no. Tomorrow morning is the free continental breakfast. They are doing some kitchen fixing of some equipment so can't cook breakfast so they are laying out a continental spread and inviting everyone to come and get it. My plan is to stop by after volleyball. The leftover rosemary potatoes will keep.

Hazel clearly heard me yesterday. I was out in the elbow when she went down to visit Bonny and give her an update. I didn't see either after but I know Bonny appreciated being looped in directly. And I appreciate sharing the load for sure!

Today I got no commitments. I will probably go over to the second hand shop when it opens. The Mariners game is a day game so there's that to watch.

It was beautifully mild this morning (below 70°F!) and the humidity was even down - from 94% which it's been for the last I don't know how many mornings to a slightly more comfortable 84%. We're supposed to have another couple of mild nights and days in the 80s (high 20s) before it gets hot and up into the 90s/high 30s by the end of the week.

I didn't have this appointment on my calendar but I got a text message and an email from the pest control people saying I have an appointment tomorrow for a quarterly treatment. If I only wanted them to do outside I wouldn't even need to be here (although I will be) but I want them to do inside the en suite bathroom as well just to keep the humpback crickets at bay.

Something not good seems to have happened at my neighbours' across the court. I saw an ambulance take the husband (P) away around 10 am, although I didn't hear any sirens when it arrived and he was brought out of the house sitting up in a wheelchair so maybe it's not life-threatening or at least not immediately. The wife (K) followed in her car and hasn't come back yet. K is my age but P is 10 years or so older.

There's also something unusual happening at the house right at the top of the cul de sac. The woman who lives there, M, seems somewhat eccentric and also seems to be alone in the world. (I believe her parents lived in that house until they died and she's been living alone there ever since; she was already living there by herself before I first visited here in 2004.) Suddenly this week an out of state car (from Massachusetts) is parked in her driveway and a few worn-out household furnishings and other bits and pieces are out on the kerb/curb.

It was fine and it is done

I suggested to Hazel that she just let me drop off the pee but, no, of course. She said she wanted to go and John was fine and she wanted out of the house. So we went. But, in the car, I told her she needed to include Bonny. That Bonny's feelings were getting bruised because she always came to me. She seemed like she understood. time... will tell.

I did get to hear - for the 8 millionth time - about how her sons delivered papers when they were kids and then picked up the old papers and sold them to recycling and then were able to buy their own first cars. Both of these 'kids' are now in their 60's. And about her hip replacement (30 years ago) and the problem with the pin, which she calls a nail, 5 years later.

We stopped at Safeway on the way home and I picked up a few things but totally forgot the one thing on my list and that is after I looked at my list once we were in the store. So I'm clearly heading for Hazelville myownself.

I have 2 hours before the cleaner comes. Yahoo.

Zoe status

I started this as a reply to @siglinde999 but it got to be too long so I decided to post the whole thing.

Zoe is currently eating breakfast. At 11AM. Her morning pain and inflamation meds are in the breakfast and she normally eats it first thing but today decided not to so she has no meds so far. I took her to the vet a couple of months ago and they gave her pain meds she takes twice a day and an inflamation drug. After a month I asked for more so they added gabapentin (recently in the news for excellerating dementia in humans).

She has lost most of her hearing and much of her eyesight. Neither are a problem. She sleeps better for it. I'll throw a treat on our dark floor for her and she can't find it so I have to show it to her. All easily worked around.

The two problems are dementia and arthritis. The latter requires drugs to cope that exacerbate the former.

She exhibits what is called 'sundowners' syndrome which is an early evening restlessness. Walking around the house panting heavily in an anxious manner. I give her trazodone to counteract this and it is effective. Too much knocks her out which is OK if not optimum.

The big problem is that being too hot, coming back from a walk, being in pain, suffering from dementia all have the same single symptom: continous panting. That's it. No way to differentiate.

So it is really hard to tell how much pain she is in and that is the one factor that would motivate me to consider euthanasia which, of course, I think about all the time.

There is a growing palliative care, senior care, euthanasia care for pets at home industry. There are a bunch of euthanasia adverts as that is a discrete service that can be easily packaged and marketed. Hospice and palliative care are more difficult. There is a vet group that does it but not near me.

All the articles say to reach out to your vet. I emailed mine but got no response. So I guess I need to go there in person.

Zoe and Toby and I still go on walks nearly every day. Zoe is off leash and walks right behind me stopping for all the important canine scent interactions writing notes along the way. She can't hear the dogs barking at her so is sublimely non reactive.

Having eaten and so taken drugs and walked, she is now lying on the floor behind me happy to be in my office with me here panting sometimes and sleeping on and off.

She's got a great life for the most part. So hard to know when to end it.

Timber Ridge Taxi

Last night, Hazel came in to ask me to take her to Bellevue this morning to turn in John's urine sample. They have two sons who live nearby and all of Timber Ridge services. But, they chose me. I'm over it. But, of course, I said yes. I said I'd like to go early so she said 10. 10, to me, is decidedly NOT early. It just means my morning is now eaten up entirely. She is sweet but so tedious. Last night she told me she couldn't drive because her eyesight was bad. And I'm sure she will tell me that again today along with everything else she has said over and over and over and over again.

I'm very tempted to say gimme the piss and you stay here. But, their health care provider is pretty sticky about stuff and I don't want to make the trip for nothing. So, I'll hang out and do nothing til 10. Take her and come home for lunch and then sit in the elbow while the cleaner cleans and finally get some me time about 2:30.

I do think that Hazel and I are going to have a chat about letting Bonny in on some of this action. I'm going to suggest we give Bonny a turn. I should have done that last night. Bonny has said many times to them and to me that she wants to help. Hazel somehow understands that Bonny's help is only available in the afternoon and she wanted to do this first thing. ARUGH. Regardless, I'm going to tell Hazel that Bonny is feeling left out.

The place we are going is very near other stuff, too. Like the shoe store I want to go to and a couple of other stores. But, not with Hazel.

Man, I am a whiner today!! I'd better fix my attitude before 10. Also I'm thinking there may be a gas purchase needed soon.

In other news. My $4 phone case from Amazon is perfect! 2 days with no case on my phone was stressful. That damn thing is slippery when naked. This case is slim and grippy and worth every one of those 400 pennies.

I slept really well last night, which I was expecting after my lack of sleep the previous night. I went for an early walk rather than a run as it was, as usual, a warm and humid night/early morning.

After breakfast I did the shopping and the chopping - preparing vegetables for meals for the rest of the week. It was cloudy and stayed cool enough for me to have some windows open while I was working in the kitchen, but now the sun is out and the temperature is rising accordingly.

A few weeks ago I had a letter from my Ob/Gyn saying she is leaving the local Kaiser and I need to choose a new doctor in her place. I made my choice, and a week or two ago I had a letter from the new doctor introducing herself and suggesting I should make an appointment with her just to meet I guess so she can be familiar with me. I vaguely remember having a mammogram a couple of years ago and I don't remember when I last had a Pap test, so I've made an appointment with this new doctor for next week. I suspect I no longer need Pap tests but I'll check with the doctor, and I might not be due for another mammogram yet.

overstock>over it

My monthly subscribe and save order of cat food arrived and now I have, on hand, more than a month of the same cat food they have loved for a year. And they seem to have fallen out of love with it. Of course. I just wish they had let me know before the order.

Hazel came over yesterday. Mainly I think she just wanted to get out of her apartment and stretch her legs. She didn't stay long. But, she did tell me that her son came to get them this morning and they got a guy from security to come up with a wheel chair for John to go to get blood drawn. They got there and it was closed and only then did they figure out it was today and not yesterday. They are sinking fast. I did get Martha to bring them up a wheelchair to have for a while. She runs a loaner closet where she keeps walkers and wheel chairs and all kinds of paraphernalia. Then Bonny came in for an update. So it was busy-ish. But, fine.

Our mailroom has locked boxes for each apartment for our USPS mail and a cubby for each apartment. The cubbies are not locked and are used for anything - menus, private notes, TR announcements, etc. I have a little fabric pouch on my phone that I carry my mail key in. It's always been annoying because it keeps the phone from lying flat. BUT way more annoying not to have the key when you are in the mailroom. Myrna was always having to make a special trip back home because she forgot her key. A fair number of women carry little purses around with their keys and, of course, men have pockets.

Something came up Saturday when Martha and Bonny and I were chatting about mail keys and Bonny said 'I keep one in the back of my cubby.' GENIUS!!!! She said when she first moved in she saw a woman get hers out of the back of the cubby, open her mail box, and then return the key to the cubby. 'I thought it was a great idea.' Me, too - why the fuck did you wait so long to share it??????

So. That means I now only have to carry my card key. The key that unlocks lock down areas. Like the pool after working hours. If you punch a hole in the card key, it breaks it. I think I can slip it between my phone and the case but my current case is too thin. And I will probably, may, might, could maybe, am thinking about getting a new phone when Google makes the next one available in August/September. So I don't want a new case. But, Amazon has one for $4 that will work so ok.

No aqua yoga today which is fine by me. The new guy is way too much inner peace and world saving and not nearly enough stretching. On the up side, his voice doesn't carry well in the pool room so I don't have to hear his crap but still, I'd sure like more good stretching. We rarely have more than two or three people in class and one of them told him the music was distracting. The music was about the only thing interesting and now it's gone. I'm guessing/hoping that soon the class will be, too. I could just quit going but I would love for their to be more water classes so I go to show support and, besides, I was the one who asked for a water stretching class.

I need gas in the car and a trip to the charity shop. I broke my heavy tissue box for the bedroom and I want another and I haven't checked for 'hair' sweaters recently, but I think I might wait until tomorrow when the house cleaner is here.

Slowly fixing my environment

But for the small stuff I'm pretty much done with my office. The rest will be the usual battling entropy. I moved around some of the pictures and added a couple. What the desk wall looks like:

The lovely couple over the door are my great grandparents on my father's side. Prussian soldier and wife. Reminds me of Crosby's 'Triad'

Your mother's ghost stands at your shoulder
Got a face like ice, just a little colder
Saying, "You cannot do that, it breaks all the rules
You learned in schools"

The reverse wall is my quiet chair, the place I typically use to meditate:

At some point when I first set up our retail space for Friendly Computers I ran across this neon monkey.  It was in the store window and then in my office window and now on the wall behind my chair.  When he first met my mom at an age when he could barely talk he called her Monkey.  And, of course, the way things went she was Monkey for the rest of her life and has watched over me and now meditates with me. I can't make the colors come out right.  It is not so garish.  It is also on an Alexa routine and comes on every evening shutting off at bedtime.  She is accompanied by two amazing paintings by a friend of hers and a small landscape by one of her ancestors who was a Southwest painter.  So they no doubt talk at night.

All in all I'm happy with things for the moment.  There may still be some rearranging.  I took down a huge picture of a sailing ship that belonged to my grandfather.  I saved it but it takes up wall space that could contain a couple of other hangings, yet to be determined.  I'm giving it some more thought.

But things are picked up and cleaned and neat.  For the moment.

We had a very dramatic rain/thunder storm late yesterday afternoon; the rain started around 5 pm and lasted for a couple of hours, and we ended up having about three inches of rain in that time. I'm really glad we had that drainage work done a few years ago (actually, the two lots of drainage work - the first reshaped the front yard so that water which used to pour down our yard to the house now goes into a French drain and around to the back of the house where the yard slopes downward away from the house, and the second was to install a French drain right around the foundations of the house and also reshaped the front path so water is directed away from the front path and front door).

I had a video call from Violet this morning asking me for help with crocheting. Her much older cousin L taught her to do basic chain stitches last summer, but Violet hadn't done any crocheting since then and couldn't remember how. Yesterday she went to a crochet class at their local public library and discovered that, while everybody else picked up the basic stitch quickly, she wasn't able to. She knew how to make the beginning slip knot but couldn't work out how the next bit works. So I guided her through how to put the yarn over the hook and then draw the loop through the beginning slip stitch, and after a few tries she got it. She then proceeded to make a long chain, and found that although her work started out lumpy and uneven, by the time she'd done 40 or so stitches it was looking lovely and even. She wants to make a scarf, so I told her that when I'm there next I'll help her learn how to build on the chain stitches.

Aria popped into the video and showed me that she has two missing bottom teeth, and two tiny new teeth just poking through. She also asked me to show her a blanket I've made, so I showed her the crochet squares I've made over the last couple of weeks which will become a blanket.

I had a very bad night of insomnia last night, worse than usual. I fell asleep before 10 pm but I woke up again before 11 and couldn't get back to sleep. I got up and read for a while, then tried to sleep again but once again I just lay awake so I got up yet again and read. I think I finally fell asleep between 3:30 am and 4 am, and woke up for the day just after 5 am even though I had turned off my alarm. In all that time awake I did read most of my latest book, the story of a woman (Emma Gatewood from Ohio) who was the first woman to through-hike the Appalachian Trail, at the age of 67 in 1955, wearing tennis shoes and carrying a small drawstring bag with a few necessities. She went on to do a lot more long distance hiking (including hiking the entire Appalachian Trail twice more) and was instrumental in drawing attention to the benefits of walking and also of conservation.

overcast

And cloudy - that's this morning and it's lovely. I'm beginning to notice incremental day shortness. It's still light at 5 am but not like it was last month. It's still light at 9 pm but not like was last month. Progress.

Yesterday was just a lovely day of OMG-I-am-so-lucky-to-live-here. It just slaps me upside the head sometimes in the most wonderful way.

Today I had nothing on the agenda until I got a text from Richard (one of my volleyball buds and husband of Martha) asking if I would be willing to take him to Costco today to get a new battery for his car. Happy to. He says it will take an hour. Richard is one of those guys who has his own way of doing things and that is coupled by his extreme thrift. He spent his life teaching and then managing teachers of special education. In fact, turns out, one of the teachers he managed years ago, was Jan - the woman who just moved into Myrna's apartment!

So I'll meet him out at the elbow at 10. He has exceedingly long legs. It will be fun to watch them fold into the Smart Car.

Last week, when I took Martha to Fred Meyers, we stopped at Krispy Kreme and I took some mini donuts to elbow coffee. Everyone oood and awed at the donuts and I explained that they had Martha to thank and then they oood and awed at Martha "you got to ride in the little car???!!!" It was pretty funny.

We'll be home in time for baseball. The Mariners beat Houston in a walk off long after I was asleep.

Guess I'd better get dressed. And I need to put in a load of laundry and unload the dishwasher.
