food everyone but me likes
May. 8th, 2015 11:07 amI'm a weirdly picky eater. I think some stuff has to do with texture, but there are a lot of things that I don't like, which makes my life difficult when ordering food. Also, the things I don't like are generally things that people love, so I never hear the end of 'you don't like X??? How can you not like X???'
So, a short list of some of the common foods I dislike
Anything from a pig - sausage is OK as long as it's part of a dish (e.g. mixed in with eggs and cheese and other stuff), but I don't care for bacon or pork chops or ham or anything like that.
Peppers of any kind - I just don't like the taste. For lack of a better explanation, a lot of vegetables taste like dirt to me, and these are among the worst offenders.
Onions, except in onion rings - Even some onion rings are gross to me, but overall I just don't like the onion flavor.
Strawberries - they taste gross, the texture is gross, there's just nothing I like about strawberries. I always make sure men I'm dating know this so they don't show up with chocolate covered strawberries for me.
Anything remotely spicy - I don't know if my mouth is just really sensitive, but even a small amount of heat makes me feel like my whole mouth is on fire, and it is not a pleasant sensation. As a kid, I once took a bite of pizza that had red pepper flakes sprinkled on it. I thought I was going to die. The staff had to bring me a glass of milk. And that's from red pepper flakes, which I'm guessing most people would consider not hot at all.
Tomatoes - my guess is this is 100% texture, because I'm fine with tomato-based sauces and other things like that, but eating raw tomatoes is just yucky to me.
Cooked fruit - For the most part, I like my fruit cold and firm. I especially dislike any kind of cooked apple, but other stuff like fruit pies and cherries jubilee and any other kind of heated fruit is not something I ever want to eat. If I absolutely had to have something, I would probably be OK with blueberry pie. I guess muffins/breads would be the exception to this - I do enjoy banana bread and blueberry muffins. But I think it's because of the format.
There's lots of other things that I would say 'no thanks' to. It makes it hard to order food in restaurants. It's also a little embarrassing to say 'can I get the turkey bacon sandwich with no bacon?'
Oh, and one other honorary mention - wine. I feel like when we turned 30, all my peers suddenly started ranting and raving about this wine or that wine. I've had all kinds of different kinds of wines (because when I tell people this they insist I just need to try this type of wine or that type of wine). Every wine I have ever tried tastes like vinegar. Sometimes it tastes like vinegar with a little something else, but even then it's like 98% vinegar and 2% something else.
